The Lighter and Fun Side of Serving Merrillville – by Rick Bella

At our first meeting in March, the Town Council had the pleasure of meeting a truly inspiring young Merrillville resident, Myles Mosby. His mother, Tiffany, reached out to share his story—one that’s all about determination, big dreams, and making waves (literally!).

Myles, an 11-year-old swimmer with Olympic aspirations, has been training hard despite the challenges of type 1 diabetes. As a homeschooler, he needed to have a physical activity, a requirement from the state, and once he hit the water, he never looked back. Competing against some of the fastest swimmers in the Region, Myles qualified in multiple events for the State Swim Meet in Indianapolis on March 21st.

We recognized his incredible dedication and honored Myles and his proud parents, Tiffany and Wendell, with an extraordinary Town Council Declaration celebrating his achievements and wishing him the best at State. But we wanted to do more than applaud from the sidelines—we wanted to show Myles that his town was behind him every stroke of the way.

So, we sent him off in true Merrillville style! On the evening of March 20th, as Myles and his parents prepared to leave for Indianapolis, they stepped outside to a surprise: a full Police and Fire Department vehicle escort, lights flashing and sirens sounding, ready to see him off. We accompanied him out of town, cheering him on and wishing him the best of luck. He even met one of our firefighters, Bryan Chovanec, a past swimmer, who tried out for the Olympics in the same pool where Myles would be swimming in Indianapolis on Saturday.

The results are in from the Friday & Saturday, March 21/22 State Swim Meets. From Myles father, Wendell “This has been one of the most amazing experiences that he’s ever had. He is now the 30th FASTEST 11-12 year old in the 50 meter breaststroke, and 21st quickest in the 100 meter breaststroke.”

Congratulations, Myles. Best of luck in all of your future meets and with your aspirations to be on the Olympic team one day swimming for the USA! Keep up the great work and your excellent attitude. It was indeed a great honor to meet you. -Rick Bella, Merrillville Town Council President
