Town Tax Talk - April 10th

The Merrillville Town Council will host another Town Tax Talk scheduled for Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the Mike Anderson Event Center, 6600 Broadway, in Merrillville, Indiana, at 6:30 p.m.

The program will include presentations by Spencer Summers, Economic Development Director for the Northwest Indiana Forum, and Jim Higgins, a partner with London Witte Group, LLC in Indianapolis.

The information will concentrate on economic development topics and explain why cities and towns use these tools to attract businesses to a community. The topics will include. . .

Town of Merrillville Allocation Areas

Tax Increment Financing (TIF)

Tax Abatements (Deferred Tax Payments by Companies)

Our presenters will be joined by panel participants who are experts in these complex topics. The panel includes…

Bob Swintz, CPA & Advisor, LWG, Indianapolis

Thomas Pitman, Partner Barnes & Thornburg, LLP, Indianapolis

Michael Griffin, M.P.A., Merrillville Town Manager

Anthony Sindone, Economist, Forensic Economist, Financial Analyst

Daniel Botich, President and Sr. Development Economic Finance Professional

There will be plenty of time for open audience questions, and we’ll be sure to provide information about why town leaders use these tools so much to attract development in Merrillville.

What are the impacts of using these tools?

How tax incentives affect residents who pay real estate taxes?

How TIFs do or don’t affect the school system funding?

How many other cities and towns use these economic development tools?

Do TIFs work, or have they worked in Merrillville?

How many jobs are created?

And any other of your burning questions about these topics. I hope you can make this meeting to learn more about how your town can attract great businesses to Merrillville.

I look forward to seeing you at this educational event. It would be great for students too! -Rick Bella, Town Council President
