Bella to Continue at the Helm of Merrillville Council for 2025

Councilman Rick Bella will serve his sixth consecutive year as President of the Merrillville Town Council, with Rhonda Neal continuing as Vice President. This stability in leadership has been crucial in guiding Merrillville, a community of 36,500 residents in northwest Indiana, through unprecedented growth. Bella, along with other council leaders such as Redevelopment Commission President Shawn Michael Pettit and Plan Commission President Margaret Uzelac, has experienced continued growth within the team.

Under Bella’s leadership, the council has implemented innovative strategies to foster development, including using Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Districts, establishing Economic Revitalization Zones, and offering Tax Abatements for large projects. These efforts have made Merrillville an attractive destination for large-scale residential and commercial projects.

“This is certainly a team effort, and no one council member can do much of anything without the cooperation and team effort of our entire seven-member board, as well as our supporting other boards and commissions who all work tirelessly to make our community strong,” Bella added. “It takes a village to quote a familiar saying.”

Among the town’s recent achievements is the addition of a massive commercial warehouse, spanning over 1,100,000 square feet, which was recently leased to Amazon—its second facility in Merrillville. This project has created hundreds of jobs and significantly boosted the town’s tax base.

On the residential front, Merrillville is collaborating with developer Randy Hall of Luxor Homes on a transformative 400-acre housing project on the town’s far west side. This development, one of the largest in Lake County, will offer various housing options to meet the needs of current and future residents.

As Merrillville continues its development boom, the Town Council’s forward-thinking leadership remains focused on creating opportunities and enhancing the community’s quality of life. Bella and his team’s dedication ensures Merrillville is poised for sustained growth and prosperity.
