Media Reports Reference Merrillville in ICE Processing Center Map

The Town of Merrillville is aware of a Washington Post article, as well as a subsequent front-page story in today’s (December 31) NWI Times, reporting that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is evaluating locations nationwide for potential processing centers.

Merrillville was referenced in the Washington Post article as a possible processing site on a map accompanying the story. However, the Town of Merrillville has received no official communication from ICE or any federal agency regarding such a proposal.

Upon learning of the report, town officials immediately began reviewing the matter. At this time, the town has no information confirming the accuracy of the Washington Post report as it relates to Merrillville.

For clarity, an ICE processing center is generally a short-term administrative facility used to process individuals who are in federal immigration custody. These facilities are typically used for identification, documentation, background checks, and coordination of next steps, which may include release, transfer to another facility, or placement into immigration court proceedings. Processing centers are not typically long-term detention facilities, although their exact function can vary depending on federal needs and the design of the site.

Town leadership will continue to seek clarification from appropriate federal and other relevant sources and will keep the community informed as verified and accurate information becomes available.
