If you’ve noticed cars flying down our neighborhood streets lately, you’re not alone. Speeding is one of the top complaints we hear from Merrillville residents — and truthfully, it’s not just our town. Communities everywhere are struggling with drivers who ignore speed limits and put others at risk.
Here in Merrillville, we’ve already taken several steps to slow things down. You may have seen the new speed humps installed in some areas. They’ve helped reduce speeds, but they come with challenges. They’re expensive to install and, because of our snowy winters, we must remove them each year so our snowplows can safely and effectively clear the streets.
Even more frustrating, a few drivers have tried to outsmart the system by steering onto residents’ lawns to avoid the humps altogether — which damages property and shows a total disregard for their neighbors.
Recognizing that this issue needs a stronger response, Police Chief Kosta Nuses (pictured above) has formed a special Traffic Unit focused solely on enforcing traffic laws. This new unit, currently with only two police officers, will target speeders, reckless drivers, and anyone creating unsafe conditions on our roads. Their goal is simple: make Merrillville’s streets safer for everyone. They will also handle accident reports.
So far, the unit, which only started officially on September 15, 2025, has made a huge impact. The results demonstrate the measurable impact of having personnel properly resourced and focused on specific objectives.

From Police Chief Nuses: “These results serve as a strong testament to what can be accomplished when personnel are properly structured, equipped, and resourced. The outstanding early performance of the Traffic Unit underscores the effectiveness of dedicated enforcement efforts and highlights the value of continued investment in specialized operations designed to improve roadway safety and enhance overall community service.”
As your Town Council President, I want residents to know that we hear your concerns and are taking them seriously. But we also need your help. Please spread the word about our new Traffic Unit and encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to slow down. Together, we can change the driving culture in our community and make Merrillville a safer place to live, work, and raise a family.
