A much-needed resurfacing project on U.S. 30 in Merrillville and Hobart will require overnight lane closures from late March through late November, the Indiana Department of Transportation announced. INDOT contractor Milestone Contractors North will make overnight lane closures on U.S. 30 between Indiana 55 (Taft Street) and Indiana 51 (Grand Boulevard) beginning on or after March 24. Lane closures will be in place during the overnight hours of approximately 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., with alternating intersections closed temporarily when work is occurring in that area, INDOT said.
Work will begin on U.S. 30 between Indiana 55 and Interstate 65 and last through late May, at which point crews will switch to work on U.S. 30 between I-65 and Indiana 51. Motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns throughout the project, as overnight lane closures will be set up and taken down each evening, INDOT said. Work will include patching, milling, resurfacing, traffic signal loops, and pavement markings. Shoulder work for drainage improvements will take place during daytime hours, but daytime work should not have any impacts on traffic, the state agency said.
We are pleased and grateful to hear that U.S. 30 will be getting repaired and INDOT’s plan to work at night just makes sense to not only lessen the impact to motorists but to, more importantly, help to keep construction workers safer as nighttime traffic will be less during the overnight hours. The Town of Merrillville would like to THANK the Indiana Department of Transportation for the repair and repaving project. Please remember to obey traffic signs and please SLOW DOWN! -Rick Bella, Town Council President, Ward 5 Representative
