The Town of Merrillville is proud to announce the creation of its very first Park Board, marking a major milestone in the municipality’s continued investment in parks and recreation. This exciting new initiative will provide critical leadership and support as the town grows and will enhance recreational programs, green spaces, and community connections.

Applications are accepted until July 31 from Merrillville residents who are passionate about public service and shaping the future of Merrillville’s parks and recreation.

“We’re proud to launch this new chapter for parks and recreation in Merrillville,” said Town Council President Rick Bella. “This board will help us expand services, improve park amenities, and create more opportunities for residents of all ages to enjoy active and connected lifestyles.”

The Park Board will consist of four members who will be appointed by the Town Council.

“This is an incredible opportunity for residents to get involved and make their voices heard,” Town Council Vice President Rhonda Neal said. “We want this board to reflect the diversity, energy, and pride of Merrillville, and help ensure our parks serve everyone.”

The new Park Board will play a central role in overseeing current and future parks programs, improving facilities, and guiding implementation of the new Merrillville Parks & Recreation master plan. The board will also have direct oversight of the town’s Park Superintendent, who will report to the board on operations and programming.

“Our parks are places where families connect, children play, and communities grow stronger,” said Town Councilman Shawn Pettit, who serves as the chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee. “The Park Board will help us deliver on a bold vision for safe, accessible, and engaging spaces for all Merrillville residents.”

Park Board members will be appointed based on their interest in and knowledge of parks and recreation. Initial Park Board terms will be staggered. As those terms expire, each new appointment will be for a four-year term. To ensure political diversity, no more than two members from the same political party can serve on the Park Board.
