93rd Avenue Improvement Project

Cities and Towns are responsible for the South and East streets when they boarder neighboring Cities of Towns, so this project as well as the road upkeep is Merrillville’s responsibility although the road and improvements will benefit neighboring communities as well.

This project allowed the town to begin our commitment to start our beautification of Merrillville by making 93rd Avenue a nice boulevard type look and feel complete with center island planters and old fashion styled street lights. The same design was add east of Broadway down to Mississippi street.

The same planter design will be installed in front of the Town Hall at 7820 Broadway to keep a consistent look and beautify the area there with plantings, trees, and flowers.

Mississippi Street Improvement Project

Work is just beginning on a major improvement project on 93rd Avenue from Mississippi Street all the way to Taft/Main Street. The project will provide improved turn lanes, removal of center medians, additions of planters, proper crosswalks and signals, and repairs to drainage areas along the roadway. The project is being funded by the Mississippi Street TIF District as well as the Broadway TIF District. The project will not increase any real estate taxes in Merrillville.

UPDATE as of 1/28/22 – Mississippi Street is now open from 93rd Avenue south to 101st Street. Work will completed this spring, but drivers may enjoy the new wider roadway. Final work will be completed this spring as well as the final ‘finishing’ coat of asphalt and road stripping.
