The Town of Merrillville is offering four full-time positions in our Public Works department. The job titles are Labor Class 1 and are entry-level positions assisting in the maintenance of Town-owned utilities, local roads and streets, town facilities, and vehicles. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written work order instructions.
$22.07 per hour with healthcare, paid holidays off, and other benefits.
The educational requirement is having a high school diploma or equivalent. This is a physical job and the physical abilities are listed in the official job description posted below.
Other qualifications include those applicants must have a valid Indiana Driver’s License and within 90 days of hire must currently have or be able to obtain an Indiana Class B CDL (Certified Driver’s License) which the town will train for and pay all costs with a commitment to stay with the town for a period.
Some of the essential duties and responsibilities include maintenance of local roads, streets, and sidewalks. Assist in snow removal using a variety of trucks equipped with plows. Assist in the town-wide leaf pick-up program, assist the town in a variety of maintenance, installation, and equipment setup for town events, placement of signs, and light-duty work in all town buildings and grounds. The ability and willingness to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis is a must, especially during winter snow months and other emergencies in town.
The environment and hazards are listed in the job description. The Public Works team works together daily assisting to keep the town running smoothly. They are the heart of the town and work a 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule Monday through Friday. It is a full-time job with full-town healthcare benefits, paid time off for many holidays, and overtime when needed.
